Delightfully Wonky
I recently bought this vintage top. Even though I have a zillion WIP's and tops waiting to be quilted I couldn't resist those happy polka dots, little daisy fabrics and the way it is so delightfully wonky.
I think it's been washed, but the colours are still so strong. I'm thinking it might be 30's or 40's but I'm really not sure. Here's a close up of the sweet fabrics.
It's completely hand sewn.
It could do with a bit of attention from an iron though I don't think it's destined to ever be a flat quilt. It's crinkles and crumples add so much to it's charm.
I'm not quite sure what I'll do with it yet. It would be fun to quilt with perle cotton. or tied with red wool. Someone suggested I put the backing on using a pillowcase method without wadding/batting and use it as a cotton throw. I'm pretty slow at these decisions so in the meantime I'm enjoying seeing it draped over my banister...
and I'll marvel at it's surprise combinations and it's easy going piecing.
Do you ever get obsessed by a quilt that knocks you off your chair and you just know you'll have to make it one day? I do and this is my latest obsession - nine patch blocks placed slightly off center so they swirl out in a big circle. Oh my golly I LOVE this quilt!!
It's a poster for an exhibition at The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Texas. How cool is that! I'd be there in a flash if I wasn't on the other side of the world so I'll just have to thank Bill of Wonkyworld for sharing some photos of the quilts.
Okay back to my millions of WIPs, I'll show progress photos in my next post...

ReplyDeleteThe quilt on the poster is fascinating. And it only uses 9-patches!!
What an incredible find Rachael! The naivety of it makes it an absolute winner! I like the idea of a simple pillowcase backing and maybe tying it too.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE the quilt you bought. The wonkyness brings life of it's own to this quilt. Makes it so unique in it's own way! Colors are my favorite too. I bet you could just sit there and look at all those prints for hours!
Perle cotton quilting sounds perfect. Can't wait to see it all finished.

ReplyDeleteOld quilts never cease to amaze me. This one is incredible--all the happy color and the slightly off looks of some of those fabrics choices. It all works well together even after so much time!

ReplyDeletethat is truly magnificent. what a find
ReplyDeleteWonky cabins filled with love. So much love to have hand stitched all of it. It deserves to be finished and loved in return.
ReplyDeleteStrange that I dont see wonky in the flyer. I see a deliberate pattern going round and round in circles. Whats more, I see it in bright vibrant colours that would really make it sing.
So when are you making this one?
Your wonky log cabin top is wonderful! I adore how casual the piecing is and the faded look to the fabrics. I too saw the 9-patch poster and drooled over it! Great idea!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun find! The colors and prints are so happy. I think perle cotton would be a wonderful complement!
ReplyDeleteOh Rachael what a fun find...so very you, I just love it...what a great idea to put a back on it and use it straight away...you never know you could quilt it another time!
ReplyDeleteSo divine! Please use Thermore or similar for wadding, then a cute backing, then cuddle it to death, lol! This little darling is crying out to be used and loved!
